Nick Nason, solicitor and principal of Edgewater Legal, frequently advises internationally recognised creatives on the Global Talent immigration route. Outlined below is how design industry professionals may qualify.

The Design Business Association (DBA), acting on behalf of Arts Council England, assesses endorsement applications for professionals working in the design industry.

Visa outline

The Global Talent visa allows you to live and work in the UK for up to five years, with the flexibility to choose the length of your visa. It also provides a pathway to settlement in the UK and, ultimately, British citizenship.

Before applying for the visa itself, you must first obtain an endorsement from the Design Business Association (DBA). Once endorsed, you can then submit your Global Talent visa application.

Applicants endorsed under the Exceptional Talent route may be eligible to apply for settlement after three years. Those endorsed under the Exceptional Promise route will usually become eligible after five years.

Who can apply?

You can apply under one of two routes:

Applying as a leader

This route is for established leaders in the design industry.

You must:

  • Have worked regularly in your field for the last five years.
  • Be producing work that has been published, distributed or exhibited internationally.
  • Demonstrate a substantial professional track record in at least two countries, one of which may be your country of residence.
  • Show that your work is considered outstanding by the Design Business Association.

Applying as a potential leader

This route is for emerging leaders at an earlier stage of their career.

You must:

  • Have worked regularly in your field for the last five years.
  • Be producing work that has been published, distributed or exhibited internationally.
  • Demonstrate a developing professional track record in at least one country, which may be your country of residence.
  • Show exceptional promise within the design industry.

Your evidence may relate to work completed individually, as part of a group, or as a contributor to a group’s work.

The main criteria

You must provide:

  • Three dated letters of recommendation.
  • A professional CV.
  • Up to ten pieces of supporting evidence from the last five years.

Each piece of evidence must be no more than two sides of A4.

Letters of recommendation

You must provide three letters of recommendation.

Two letters must come from established organisations that are recognised experts within the design industry. At least one of these organisations must be based in the UK.

The third letter may come from another recognised organisation or from an individual who is an expert in your field.

You must have worked directly with each organisation or individual providing a recommendation.

Each letter should:

  • Be written specifically for your Global Talent application.
  • Be signed by a senior member of the organisation.
  • Explain how the author knows you and your work.
  • Describe your achievements and why you are considered a leader or potential leader.
  • Explain how you would benefit from living and working in the UK.
  • Describe how you would contribute to the UK’s cultural and creative sector.
  • Outline your future professional plans.

The letters must also be typed, dated, signed and include the organisation’s contact details. The author must also provide a CV or other evidence of their professional credentials.

Supporting evidence

You must demonstrate that you meet at least two of the following three criteria.

International media recognition

Provide at least two examples of reviews or critical coverage of your work in internationally recognised media.

Evidence should:

  • Be published within the last five years.
  • Include your name.
  • Identify the publication date.
  • Show the country of publication.
  • Include commentary on the quality of your work.

Applicants under the Exceptional Talent route should provide evidence from at least two countries.

Applicants under the Exceptional Promise route may provide evidence from one or more countries. Where your name does not appear, additional documentation confirming your involvement should be provided.

International prizes

You may provide evidence that you have:

  • Won an international prize; or
  • Made a significant contribution to work that received an international prize.

Applicants under the Exceptional Promise route may also rely on international award nominations or shortlisted entries.

The award should be recognised as significant by the Design Business Association and should not be a grant or bursary.

Your evidence should identify:

  • The award category.
  • The year of the award or nomination.
  • Your contribution to the winning or nominated work.

International appearances, publications or exhibitions

You may also rely on evidence that your work has been professionally exhibited, published or distributed internationally.

Examples include:

  • International exhibitions.
  • Design publications.
  • Product launches.
  • International showcases.
  • Professional design installations.
  • Published design projects.

Your evidence should clearly show:

  • The date.
  • The country.
  • Your role.
  • Confirmation of your involvement from a senior individual.

Applicants under the Exceptional Talent route should provide evidence covering at least two countries.

PROFESSIONAL CV

You must also submit a typed CV outlining your education, professional experience and career achievements.

Applying for endorsement

Once you have gathered your supporting documents, you can submit your endorsement application.

The Design Business Association will assess whether your work demonstrates exceptional talent or exceptional promise before making a recommendation to Arts Council England.

Endorsement decisions are typically made within eight weeks.

If your endorsement application is successful, you can then apply for your UK Global Talent visa. You may choose to apply for the visa at the same time as your endorsement application or after your endorsement has been confirmed.
